Iran jams BBC Persian signal, broadcaster reports

Signal jamming believed to be linked to joint coverage of Egypt protests

The BBC has said that its Persian language service is being blocked in Iran, as a result of its continued coverage of the protests in Egypt.

“The events in Egypt are being viewed by the entire world and it is wrong that our significant Iranian audience is being denied impartial news and information from BBC Persian TV,” the BBC’s Global News Director, Peter Horrocks, was quoted by various news sources as saying.

“The BBC will not stop covering Egypt and it will continue to broadcast to the Iranian people,” he added.

It is believed that the signal jamming is linked to joint coverage of the Egypt protests by the BBC’s Arabic and Persian language services.

A BBC technician traced the signal jam to Iran, the Press Gazette online reported. Despite this interference, the service can still be streamed online.
