On February 21, 2018, Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, archeologist Martina Kušnírová, were brutally murdered in their home. As a journalist working for the online news site Aktuality.sk, Kuciak had uncovered allegations of tax fraud and financial crime implicating prominent business and political leaders in Slovakia. The double murder sparked the largest protests in Slovakia since the Velvet Revolution, and led to the resignations of Prime Minister Róbert Fico, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, and Chief of Police Tibor Gašpar.

This documentary follows the trial surrounding the murder of the young couple. In interviews with family members, journalists, lawyers, and sociologists, film director Matt Sarnecki reveals the corruption and injustice that Ján Kuciak sought to expose before his death.

The story takes an unexpected turn when a source leaks the secret murder case file to the murdered journalist’s colleagues. It includes the computers and encrypted communications of the assassination’s alleged mastermind, a businessman closely connected to the country’s ruling party. Trawling these encrypted messages, journalists discover that their country has been captured by corrupt oligarchs, judges and law enforcement officials. A reckoning awaits.  The film serves as a memento to Ján and Martina and follows their example in the battle for truth and justice.

Following the film, IPI will host a post-screening update and Q&A on the fight for justice in Kuciak’s murder (more information below ↓)
