On February 5, 2022, Rohit Biswal was killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Odisha state, eastern India. Biswal was investigating posters reportedly put up by Maoist rebels when the IED exploded, killing the reporter at the scene. Biswal worked for Dharitri, an Odia-language newspaper.

The IED is believed to have been targeting police, reports say. No suspects have been arrested.
