Nils Horner, Afghanistan

Nils Horner, the South Asia correspondent for Swedish Radio, died of a single gunshot wound to the back of the head on March 11 while conducting interviews on a street in Kabul. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The 51-year-old journalist was a veteran of conflicts, having covered the U.S. military campaigns in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, the network reported. “If someone knew and could be extremely safety conscious, it was Nils,” Swedish Radio foreign correspondent Agneta Ramberg told the network. “He had a huge experience and used that knowledge. He had also been in Kabul, many, many times before and knew all about the security situation there. But this, to be suddenly shot in the street, no one can protect against.”
