Mario Contaoi, a university professor and former radio announcer, was riding his motorcycle on the national highway in the Magsingal municipality in the province of Ilocos Sur when unidentified assailants opened fire on him. He died the following morning, Jan. 7, 2017, in a hospital. The motive for the crime was not immediately known.
