Larry Que, Philippines

Larry Que, publisher of the Catanduanes News in the island province of Catanduanes in the Philippines, was shot on Dec. 19, 2016 as he was about to enter a building in Virac where he also had an office as an insurance agent. The gunman fled on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice and Que died the following day. The killing came shortly after Que exposed a large methamphetamine laboratory in the province and criticised local officials for alleged ties to drug manufacturing. Officials later said they had obtained a second, unpublished column by Que accusing Catanduanes Governor Joseph Cua of being responsible for the laboratory.

In May 2017, Que’s common-law wife filed a complaint for murder charges against Catanduanes Governor Joseph Cua, a police officer and three others. She alleged that the officer, Vincent Tacorda, who had previously been part of a security detail guarding Que, admitted his participation in the killing to a journalist.
