Juan Carlos Hernández Ríos, Mexico – Under Investigation

Two men gunned down Juan Carlos Hernández Ríos on the evening of Sept. 5, 2017 as he was leaving his home in Yuriria, in Guanajuato state. The men, who escaped after the attack, were wearing black clothing and waiting for Hernández outside his home. Hernández, who for two months had worked as an assistant and photographer with online news site La Bandera Noticias, died as he was transported to a hospital. Hernández was an assistant to La Bandera Noticias reporter Alejandro Chávez, who reported having received threats from the family of a local mayor in recent months. Hernández also worked as a taxi driver. Within days of Hernández’s death, a representative of the Guanajuato state government denied that Hernández was a journalist or that his killing had any relation to journalistic work.
