On February 24, 2022, Jorge Luis Camero Zazueta, alias ‘El Choche’, journalist and director of the news outlet “El Informativo”, was murdered with a firearm in Empalme, Sonora. On El Informative, Camero published about security and justice in the municipality.

The death was announced by the Sonora Attorney General’s Office issued a statement on Twitter. According to the office, the killing was related to a drug dealing crime. However, this was opposed by human rights organization Article19 Mexico, that emphasized 98 percent of crimes against freedom of expression go unpunished.
