The body of journalist Dmitry Popkov was found shot dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a bathhouse outside his home in the small Siberian town of Minusinsk on May 24, 2017. Popkov, who founded Ton-M newspaper in 2012 after he was dismissed from the Minusinsk City Council for what he claimed was a politically motivated charge of beating a child, was known for his investigative journalism and for reports on abuse of power and corruption. The newspaper’s motto reportedly was “We write the things others stay silent about” and it had been under government pressure and the target of several police raids. Investigators said they were looking into several possible motives, including a link to Popkov’s “professional activities”, but the motive for the crime was not immediately known.
