On March 15, 2022, journalist Armando Linares López was shot in his hometown Zitácuaro. Linares was the eighth journalist killed in Mexico in 2022. Earlier that year, López had to announce the death of his colleague Roberto Toledo, a Mexican journalist who was also killed. Linares had received threats before and he had been in touch with the Federal Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and journalists to see whether he could be enrolled in a protection program.
