The International Press Institute (IPI) today welcomed news that a court in Istanbul has reversed a one-month ban it handed down against Turkish daily newspaper Özgür Gündem for allegedly promoting a terrorist organization.

The newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Eren Keskin, confirmed today’s reversal in conversation with a represenative of IPI’s Turkish National Committee.

Ferai Tinç, a member of IPI’s Executive Board and head of IPI’s Turkish National Committee, said: “The quick reversal of the decision to ban Özgür Gündem is a positive approach towards press freedom and makes us happy. We hope it continues and we hope the government will revise the present articles [of Turkish law] that allow anti-democratic interpretations as soon as possible.”
