On 18 May 2022, Mykolaiv-based Ukrainian news site NikVesti went offline due to a DDoS attack on its servers. NikVesti editor-in-chief Oleh Dereniuha told IMI, a Kyiv-based NGO, that the media was receiving help from Google’s Project Shield service, which helps online media deal with hacker attacks. Dereniuha said it was possible that the media was being attacked from Russia due to its reporting. He said NikVesti earlier received a letter from Yandex, a popular Russian search engine, informing that it would no longer display a NikVesti article on an intercepted conversation between Russian soldiers. Overall, following the DDoS attack the website was offline for at least several hours on the afternoon of 18 May.
