Ukrainian journalist Kostiantyn Ryzhenko disappeared in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on the day that Russian troops searched the city. Ryzhenko, the chief editor of the Kherson Newscity local news website, had previously reported that he was forced to hide because of Russians in the area were looking for him. A message appeared on his Telegram channel saying: “If you are reading this text, something has happened.” An unnamed source close to Ryzhenko confirmed to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine that he has not been in contact since the day the message arrived. On March 31, Russian soldiers searched Ryzhenko’s family’s apartment in Kherson, detained the journalist’s brother Zakhar, and seized Zakhar’s phones after accusing him of using the encrypted messaging app Signal, according to the Ukrainian National Union of Journalists (NUJU). His family believed Russian authorities were pursuing Ryzhenko because he had streamed and recorded anti-Russian demonstrations by civilians in Kherson.
