The State Duma passed a bill which enables the Prosecutor General’s Office to ban any mass media outlet if it media disseminates what authorities deem to be “false, dangerous or unreliable information”, discrediting the Russian armed forces, or calling for sanctions on Russia. It would hand the prosecutor’s office the power to revoke the registration of media outlets and block access to websites without a court order. Under the new article 56.2 in the law 2124-1 on the media, the legislation permits bans on foreign media outlets from working within Russia. The measures can be taken against media outlets of countries which have been “unfriendly” towards Russian media outlets. In addition, a foreign journalist or a correspondent may lose accreditation to work in case of unfriendly actions towards Russian media in a foreign state. The request to cancel the registration of mass media would be immediately sent to the country’s internet and communications regulator, Roskomnadzor.
