Marina Ovsyannikova, an employee on Russia’s state Channel One television, was arrested and could face criminal prosecution after she interrupted the channel’s main news programme with a protest against the invasion of Ukraine. Ovsyannikova, an editor at Channel One, burst onto the set of the live broadcast holding a placard and shouting:” “Stop the war. No to war.” The sign said: “Don’t believe the propaganda. They’re lying to you here.” The clip went viral around the world. She was arrested shortly after the protest and taken to Moscow police station. The journalist could face prison time under a newly introduced Russian law criminalizing the spreading so-called “fake news” about the Russian military and their operations in Ukraine. Ovsyannikova could also face legal consequences for encouraging “civil unrest” by telling Russians to protest. She posted on social media that she could face between five and 10 years in prison.
