On December 20, 2023, journalist Pascal Mulega, working with Radio France International (RFI), and a colleague whose name was withheld, were attacked by supporters of the ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party while reporting on the election in a voting center north of Kinshasa. Mulega’s colleague succeeded in escaping, but Mulega was surrounded and assaulted by at least a hundred individuals, believed to be supporters of the incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi. As a result of the assault, Mulega was injured on his right foot and jaw and a sum of money he had on him as well as his phone were taken away by the assailants. The Association of International Press Correspondents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (ACPI-RDC) condemned the incident.
