On September 5, 2023, journalist Khalil Kamara of the online media outlet Senego was detained in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, after responding to a police summons. The arrest and detention of Kamara followed the publication of an article about the jailed political leader Ousmane Sonko. The journalist was accused of republishing false information. This was the third Senego journalist to be detained and interrogated in the course of 20 days. In different incidents, two journalists were previously arrested and briefly detained. On August 15, Abdou Kadre Sakho was detained before being released. On August 14, Mangane Ka, Senego’s editor-in-chief, was briefly detained and interrogated over the outlet’s publications.
