On November 13, 2023, security forces in Senegal arrested and detained journalist Pape Sane of WALF FM at his media house and charged him with disseminating false news. Sane was interrogated over his republication on Facebook of an article entitled “Les Sénégalais ne vous oublieront jamais” (“The Senegalese will never forget you”), published first in 2021. The article paid tribute to General Tine, Commander of the National Gendarmerie. Like Sane, several journalists have been arrested and detained in Senegal over the publication of false information, based on article 255 of the country’s penal code.
