On January 18, at least nine journalists were arrested by the security forces in Conakry and later released. Their arrest was part of the authorities’ crackdown on press freedom, including continuing internet disruption and the jamming of several privately owned critical media since October. The arrested journalists were gathering at la Press House following the call of the umbrella union of journalists, SPPG, on the media, journalists and the general public to take to the streets their protest of the dire press freedom situation and restriction of access to information imposed by Guinea’s military-led regime.
