On 28 September 2022, a court in Russia’s Dagestan region handed a five day administrative arrest sentence to Yuliya Vishnevetskaya, a freelance correspondent for RFE/RL (a media corporation financed by the US Congress). The court found her guilty of participating in an unauthorized protest. Vishnevetskaya had been detained two days earlier, while reporting at a protest in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, at which demonstrators opposed the recent mobilization order aiming to conscript male citizens into the Russian army in Ukraine.

UPDATE: On 13 July 2024, the Supreme Court of Dagestan cancelled the initial decision to find Vishnevetskaya guilty, issued in September 2022, which led to her 5-day arrest.
