On February 1, 2024, investigative journalist Vitus Gregory Gondwe from the Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ) went into hiding as he feared for his safety following threats and surveillance by the military forces. This followed the publication of an investigative report revealing transactions made by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to businessman Zuneth Sattar, who is suspected of fraud and was under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
