Journalist threatened for reporting on opposition candidate

John Kanyunyu Kyota, a freelance journalist based in North Kivu province and administrator of a WhatsApp group, received threats from unknown individuals claiming to be members of the security. The threatening phone calls accused the journalist of supporting Mosie Katumbi, one of the presidential candidates in the December general elections, through his reporting. As of December 6, 2023, faced with repeated threats, and out of fear for his life and safety, Kyota went into hiding.
