On 2 January 2022, Bild journalist Björn Stritzel was injured by shrapnel in a shelling attack in Druzhkivka (Donetsk Oblast). What was probably a glass splinter from a window he was sitting by cut him on the forehead while he was having dinner. Shortly after the attack, Stritzel tweeted that he was not sure where the blast came from, and wrote that his “best guess” was that the blast was “some part of missile coming down close by.” Stritzel supposed that the attack was directed at a railway station close to the hotel he was staying in. The attack was also reported by Bild editor-in-chief Johannes Boie on the publication’s website. Russian forces later took responsibility for the attack on Druzhkivka, claiming they had shot at military targets.
