On 7 October 2023, Intent Press, a media outlet based in Odesa, southern Ukraine, said that its website had been targeted in a cyber attack on the same day. As a result of the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, the website Intent.Press was unavailable for half an hour, according to the media outlet’s editor-in-chief Valery Bolhan, who spoke to the Institute of Mass Information (IMI), a Ukrainian press freedom group. During this period of time, the Intent Press team attempted to “fight off” attacks on the website, in order to keep the newsroom’s control over it, Bolhan said. The media outlet’s editor-in-chief added that according to preliminary information, the attack could have been organized from Russia. Bolhan said he believed that this was “not a coincidence”, as several Ukrainian online media had been recently targeted in similar attacks. The media outlet did not confirm whether it had reported the incident to police, which it initially planned to. The fact that the attack was organized from Russia was not officially confirmed later either.
