On 5 February 2024, Russian independent media reported that local authorities placed Hugo Gurdon and Tom Rogan, respectively the editor-in-chief and a political journalist at conservative news outlet The Washington Examiner, on the country’s list of “terrorists and extremists”. The decision foresees measures such as freezing of assets and a ban on financial operations in Russia, however Gurdon and Rogan are not based in Russia and it is unclear whether their inclusion on the list will have any practical consequences. Russian independent media outlet SOTA claimed that Rogan was known for a 2018 article in which he suggested that Ukraine should bomb the bridge linking Crimea to mainland Russia, which was built following the annexation of the peninsula.

UPDATE: On March 6, Russian independent media reported that Russia’s Ministry of Interior additionally put Rogan on the country’s ‘wanted’ list.
