On 14 July 2025, the Investigative Committee of Russia reported that it had opened a criminal case against Dmitry Kuznets, an exiled journalist who works for independent outlet Meduza as a military affairs columnist. Russian authorities accused Kuznets of violating laws which ban “carrying out the activities” of an “undesirable organization”: Meduza was legally designated as an organization of this type in January 2023. If found guilty, Kuznets faces an in absentia sentence of up to four years in prison. Kuznets’s main activities at Meduza include commenting on Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, specifically on the situation on the front line.

UPDATE: On 7 August 2025, Kuznets was placed on Russia’s ‘wanted’ list.
