A criminal case was opened against journalist Olena Yurchenko, an editor at the Krym.Realii news outlet, for discrediting the Russian armed forces by a court in Kerch, a city in the east of Russian occupied Crimea. Krym.Realii, a project created by the U.S. Congress-funded Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe, has covered events in Crimea since its illegal annexation by Russia in 2014. Yurchenko was charged under Article 20.3.3 of the Russian Civil Code, a charge that may cause the journalist to face a fine ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 rubles. If she is deemed to have committed the offense repeatedly, she could face criminal prosecution. Both the date of the trial at the Russian-controlled Kerch City Court, and the reason for the charges, are not yet known, according to her outlet. Yurchenko is a Ukrainian journalist from Kerch. She left the area following the annexation in 2014. She has received multiple threats in connection with her journalistic work. She has been working at Krym.Realia since 2014 and has covered Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.
