On 7 March 2022, Russian independent online media Agentstvo said at least 150 journalists had left Russia since the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Agentstvo confirmed that media workers were leaving mainly because of the measures introduced since 24 February: blocking of most independent media, as well as new possibilities for fines and prison terms for alleged “fake news” and “discreditation” of the Russian army. In particular, most journalists at the Moscow office of Meduza, Russia’s most popular independent online media, had left to join Meduza’s office in Riga. Journalists from TV Rain, Echo of Moscow and Novaya Gazeta, respectively Russia’s most popular independent TV channel, radio and newspaper, had also left the country in large mumbers.
