On 24 July 2023, AFP video journalist Dylan Collins was wounded while reporting near Bakhmut, in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. Collins was at a Ukrainian army artillery position when the area was targeted in a drone attack, said AFP reporters who witnessed the events. The American journalist received multiple shrapnel wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital. His life is not at risk. Collins, 35, has worked for AFP since 2018 and is currently the agency’s video coordinator for Lebanon and Syria. He has also regularly traveled to Ukraine for reporting work since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, arriving to Kyiv in the first days of Russia’s attack on the city. The journalist has also previously covered conflicts in the Middle East, and reported for AFP during the 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh.
