IPI Monitoring Report: Climate and environmental journalism in Africa

Journalists in Africa covering climate and environmental issues face a range of pressure and threats, from physical violence to unlawful arrests to intimidation as they attempt to cover critical stories effecting the lives and livelhoods of local communities. In our monitoring during a six month period between March and September 2025, IPI documented 19 cases of threats and violations to reporters covering critical topics related to mining, industrial projects, and land disputes, with the greatest number occurring in the DRC and Somalia. In the DRC, journalist Fiston Wilondja Mazambi was tortured and killed after investigating suspected collaboration in illegal mining between rebel groups and government authorities.
