Condemning the 11 August slaying by Maoist rebels of reporter Dekendra Raj Thapa, the IPI Nepal National Committee urged the Maoists to refrain from such inhuman activities. The IPI Nepal Chapter announced that it was donating Rs 15,000 (approx. US$ 200) to Thapa’s family.
On 18 August, members of the IPI Nepal National Committee also joined a peace rally organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) in Kathmandu, to campaign against the violence and killing of journalists in the country.
Three journalists have been killed in Nepal since the beginning of the year, and violence against the media has been increasing.
