IPI General Assembly Resolution 2009: Honouring Slain Journalists

Meeting at the annual World Congress in Helsinki, Finland on 9 June 2009, IPI members paid tribute to the journalists who have lost their lives so far in 2009.

IPI members once again condemn the fact that, all too often, reporters and media workers are deliberately targeted because of their profession.  Many journalists also die covering hostilities, caught in the crossfire while carrying out their work.  In many cases, the killers are never brought to justice.

So far this year, at least 28 journalists have been killed in areas including the Palestinian territories, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Russia and Pakistan. IPI members call on all governments and intergovernmental organisations to seek justice for all slain journalists.
