The international conference on “Oil, Gas & Media”, organised by the International Press Institute (IPI) and its national committee in Azerbaijan, will bring together major players in the oil and gas industry, energy experts and analysts, and media practitioners to explore how public opinion, freedom of information, media relations and social media all intersect with the oil and gas industries.

To be held at the Kempinski Hotel Badamdar, from September 17-19, 2012, the two-and-a-half-day event will feature panel sessions on a number of topics examining the intersections between energy and security, energy and democracy, and energy and media freedoms.

Ilham Aliyev, president of Azerbaijan, will speak at the opening session on Tuesday, September 18.

A host of noted experts and world-class journalists have already confirmed their participation, including:

  • Rovnag Abdullayev, president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR)
  • Alex Abutu Augustine, freelance science journalist and founding member of the Nigerian Association of Science Journalists
  • Tom Bergin, highly regarded oil industry reporter, European corporate strategy correspondent for Reuters, and author of “Spills and Spin: The Inside Story of BP” (2011)
  • Curtis Brainard, editor of “The Observatory”, the Columbia Journalism Review’s first department dedicated to critically analysing science coverage in the media
  • David Leigh, award-winning journalist and author, and investigations executive editor of The Guardian
  • Vugar Byramov, chairman of the Center for Economic and Social Development, Azerbaijan
  • Eldar Shahbazov, a renowned Azeri expert in nanotechnology for use in the oil and gas industry
