The International Press Institute (IPI), representing over 2000 journalists and editors from leading newspapers, magazines, broadcasting organizations and news agencies in 68 countries, is most concerned about the arrest of Mr. Francisco Reyes Foyano, a journalist working for the daily La República.

IPI is informed that Mr. Reyes was detained at the airport in Yurimaguas on the afternoon of Sunday, 19 September by members of the Air Force as he was taking photographs. He was later taken to the Yurimaguas police station.

IPI urges that the reasons for the arrest of Mr. Reyes be known, that he not be mistreated, that he be entitled to a fair trial in case he is accused of something, and that he be given his freedom immediately if he is not formerly accused. We also urge that the Government of Peru conduct a thorough investigation of the circumstances that led to his arrest.
