“Radio Silence” and IPI at THW film festival (Vienna, Dec. 10, 2019)

Post-screening discussion on press freedom in Mexico, the most dangerous place in the world for journalists

“Radio Silence” and IPI at THW film festival (Vienna, Dec. 10, 2019)
Event date:

To mark International Human Rights Day, IPI will co-host the Austrian premiere of Juliana Fanjul’s documentary Radio Silence on Dec. 10 at 20:15 at Vienna’s Topkino. IPI is partnering with This Human World (THW) film festival for the fifth consecutive year.

Synopsis:
After revealing a corruption case within the Mexican government, the well-known journalist Carmen Aristegui gets fired from the popular radio station, becoming one of the key figures in the battle against censorship, fake news and corruption in Mexico. Documentary follows this brave woman through her tumultuous everyday life as she continues to fight for press freedom on her own news platform, leading a team of investigative journalists and manoeuvring through the poisoned Mexican media landscape.

Post-screening discussion:
The documentary screening will be followed by a conversation with IPI Deputy Director Scott Griffen who recently returned from a press freedom mission to Mexico, and Florian Skrabal, editor-in-chief of Dossier.at, Austrian investigative news platform. Griffen will talk about the grave journalism crisis in Mexico, the world’s deadliest country for journalists, while Skrabal will give an insight into challenges and risks investigative reporters in Austria are facing when covering corruption, economic crimes and abuse of power, especially in cross-border investigations.

According to IPI’s Death Watch, 49 journalists were murdered in Mexico in the last five years and 9 journalists were murdered so far this year. Over 99 percent of murders and disappearances of journalists remain unsolved.
