The International Press Institute (IPI) is proud to take part in this year’s African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 20-22.

This two-day conference, organized by the Wits Centre for Journalism at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, offered interactive presentations, in-conversation sessions, innovative workshops and networking, including three events supported by IPI.

Major themes for 2023 included artificial intelligence, health, data journalism, keeping journalists safe and the future and sustainability of Investigative reporting.

Creating a global approach to journalists’ safety (CNTI)

Tuesday, 21 November  •  10:10 – 11:10  •    John Dube Auditorium

We bring together African and global experts for a deliberative discussion about journalist safety threats in the African and global contexts, particularly in the online policy and security. CNTI Executive Director and former Pew Research Center director of journalism research Amy Mitchell will give a brief opening presentation based on the findings of CNTI’s 2 issue primers on (1) journalist safety and (2) cybersecurity threats, offering an overview of the current global state of journalists’ online safety and sharing with attendees these issue primer resources. Panelists will then discuss how African journalists can help create a global understanding of journalistic risks in the digital realm and develop a global network of support in countering cyber threats.

Ryan introduced the state of his research project “Sustainability roadmap for media: Discovering and realizing revenue opportunities”, a collaboration with Report for the World. This project focuses on product and innovation strategies, how different media types capture user needs, and finally how they identify and pursue revenue opportunities. Together, we hosted a discussion amongst the participants and partner organization on media innovation, revenue opportunities, brand management, and more.
