Víctor Hugo Valdéz Cardona, a director of a television programme for a local channel as well as a doctor, was shot several times by two assailants on a motorcycle while walking with his grandson in Chiquimula on June 7, 2016. A court sentenced Guatemalan Byron Eduardo Felipe Morales to 40 years in prison for Valdéz’s murder on May 30, 2017, but another suspect remains at large. The motive for the killing remains unclear.
