On May 20, 2022, journalist Subhash Kumar Mahto was killed in the village of Sakho in the Begusarai district of India. He was affiliated with the local cable channel City News and the video application Public App, where he shared his reports.

Three men have been arrested for the murder, according to news reports, however, the motive is yet to be determined. The evening he was murdered, Mahto had attended a wedding where he was involved in a fight with one of the arrested suspects. The same suspect had previously threatened Mahto over his reporting on local mafias in the area, which Mahto reported to the police.

Mahto’s colleagues believe he was targeted because of his work. A representative of the Begusarai District Journalists Association told The Wire that Mahto’s reporting was likely to be the reason behind his killing.
