Muhammad Afzal Khwaja, Pakistan

Unidentified gunmen killed senior journalist Muhammad Afzal Khwaja and his driver in Jafarabad district, Balochistan, on Feb. 2, 2014. Khawaja worked for Zamana, a Quetta-based Urdu newspaper, as well as the Balochistan Times. According to news reports, five armed men standing on the side of the road signalled them to stop the vehicle but the driver did not stop. Armed men opened fire on the vehicle in which the two died on the spot.

Khwaja is the first journalist killed in Balochistan this year. At least 32 journalists have been killed in Balochistan since 2007, BBC reported Balochistan Union of Journalists President Irfan Saeed as saying.
