On July 24, 2022, journalist Mike Cabrera was murdered in Portoviejo, Manabí province, Western Ecuador. Cabrera was shot multiple times by a group of unknown individuals when he was talking with other people in one of the main avenues of Portoviejo. Cabrera managed Nexo Digital social media page, publishing reports on local issues. He had previously worked with news outlet Últimas Noticias and as a news presenter on TV channel Televisión Manabita.
