Israel Gonçalves da Silva was murdered on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015 in Itaenga, Pernambuco state. According to reports, Gonçalves da Silva was shot dead in front of a shopping centre by two men who fled on a motorbike. Gonçalves da Silva hosted a programme on the community radio station FM in which he discussed topics related to politics and security. Colleagues told local media that Gonçalves da Silva had received death threats related to his work. The Pernambuco Press Association characterised his killing as a loss for freedom of expression.
