On August 10, 2022, journalist Gerardo Delgado Olmedo was shot dead by two men in his car in Manta, Ecuador. Delgado was on his way to investigate a tip he had received about an alleged suicide.
Police arrested two men, one of which stated that he had been ordered to murder Delgado. The investigation is still ongoing and the motive behind the killing is yet to be determined.
Delgado was known in Manta for his local reporting and founded a Facebook page where he posted his reports. Delgado considered running for a city council seat in the upcoming local elections.
