Francisco Javier Ortiz Franco, Mexico – Targeted Due to Work

On June 22, 2004, Francisco Javier Ortiz Franco, co-editor of the Tijuana-based weekly Zeta, was gunned down by unidentified assailants in the border city of Tijuana, in Baja California State. Investigators believe that Ortiz Franco was killed because of his work as a journalist, and are considering stories he wrote about the Arellano Félix cartel as the probable motive. Still, the investigation reached no conclusion and remains open with no identified suspects or arrests.
