Diego Salomón Esteban Gaspar, a presenter for the local radio station Radio Sembrador, was shot multiple times when riding his motorcycle together with his friend José López Pedro in Ixcán on April 30, 2016. The two men were on their way from Playa Grande, Ixcán to Zunil when they were attacked by three unknown assailants who reportedly wanted to steal their motorcycle. Esteban Gaspar’s body was found by emergency workers a few blocks from his wounded friend who remained hidden for fear that the assailants would return. Although police have cited robbery as the motive for the murder, Esteban Gaspar’s wallet and other belongings were found on his body and the true motive remains unclear.
