Journalist and activist Deborah Cotton died on May 2, 2017 from injuries she received in a May 12, 2013 shooting during a Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans. Cotton, who covered culture in New Orleans, was filming the parade when two young men opened fire at a rival gang member, wounding 20.
