On September 29, 2023, the CEO of the state-owned New Era Newspaper suspended journalist Jonathan Beukes until October 31. The journalist was also barred from making public utterances about his suspension. According to Namibia Media Trust (NMT), the suspension of Beukes is connected to critical articles, editorials, and opinion pieces related to the judicial service and judges that were published in the New Era over the past week. NMT said the suspension raised serious issues about the independent editorial lines of the state media, which is publicly funded.
