On 18 May 2022, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced it was closing the Moscow office of CBC, Canada’s national broadcasting company. Journalists working at the office would have their visas revoked. A Russian diplomat posted in Canada told CBC that the move was taken in reponse to an earlier decision to cease broadcasting Russian state-controlled channels in Canada. RT and RT France were both banned in Canada in March, in the wake of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Canadian journalists working in CBC’s Moscow office would have no less than three weeks to leave the country. The office numbered ten employees in total, including local staff.
