According to the local press watchdog GPU, Gambian President Adama Barrow, during his opening ceremony of the National People’s Party (NPP) office in Bansang, on September 29, 2023, verbally attacked two media outlets. Barrow said that if there were no democracy, Kerr Fatou and Mengbe Kering, both online media outlets, would not exist in The Gambia. And all radio stations that criticize the government would not exist either. This is not an isolated incident, as President Barrow has previously singled out critical media. Prior to this, a series of attacks targeted a radio host, Alagie Bora Sissawo and Bakary Makanjag, who were arrested and detained in August and September, respectively. In October, Sissawo’s bail was revoked following another declaration of the President against critics of the government.
