On October 6, 2023, Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) reportedly sent a letter of warning to Arise News over perceived ” incendiary remarks” on their platform. Sources told IPI that the letter appeared to be in response to Arise’s recent broadcasts of The Morning Show and Newsday programmes in which guests made critical comments on the authenticity of the certificate obtained by President Bola Tinubu from the Chicago State University. Local media freedom watchdogs condemned the letter as an attempt to exert influence on the media and as an abusive use of regulations to suppress press freedom, and consequently shield the government from the demand for accountability.
