Journalist arrested in India’s Manipur state after criticizing the government for its COVID-19 response

In the northeastern state of Manipur in India, police arrested Kishorechandra Wangkhem, a TV journalist on charges of promoting enmity between groups and making a statement with an intent to incite and cause mischief following a Facebook post in which he wrote about the death of the president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party due to COVID-19 and criticized the government’s response to the pandemic. A complaint was filed with the police by local leaders of the party. He was taken into custody on May 13 and remanded until May 17.
